The Energy Market Authority (EMA) has conditionally approved two projects that will import electricity from solar farms and battery storage systems in Johor, Malaysia.

Sembcorp Utilities was approved for 300MW, and Southern Solar Alliance, a subsidiary of Malaysia's Ditrolic Energy Holdings, for 600MW. Commercial operations are expected to start around 2029.

Conditions still apply

Both companies still need approvals in Singapore and Malaysia, must line up buyers and financing, and have to reach financial close before the projects can proceed.

EMA has now approved 13 electricity import projects from Australia, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam.

The approvals add to an earlier green light for up to 1GW of imports from Sarawak, and a study into a second link of up to 2GW with Peninsular Malaysia. The power sector produces about 40% of Singapore's emissions.
