Singapore lifts its 2030 solar goal to 3 GWp after beating the old target

The new goal is 1 GW higher, and rooftops are still doing most of the work.

Singapore has raised its 2030 solar deployment target from 2 gigawatt-peak (GWp) to 3 GWp, after passing the original goal in 2025. The higher target was first announced in Budget 2026 in February.

Rooftop systems make up more than 80% of installed solar capacity. Government programmes drive much of it: SolarNova for public buildings, SolarRoof for industrial rooftops and SolarLand for vacant land. Car-park canopies are also being explored.

Falling panel costs mean some home systems can now pay for themselves in about five years.

Why solar alone will not be enough

Natural gas still generates about 95% of Singapore's electricity. The Energy Market Authority estimates solar can realistically meet only around 10% of projected power needs in 2050, which is why regional electricity imports remain part of the plan.
